About this study guide

Films, series, songs and podcasts can be excellent language resources when you use them with a plan, and this study guide shows you how. It explains how to pick content that matches your level, when to switch between native-language subtitles, target-language subtitles and none at all, and how to rewatch scenes for detail. You will learn techniques such as shadowing, sentence mining, listening for chunks rather than single words, and keeping a vocabulary notebook or flashcard deck from what you hear. Music sections look at lyrics, rhythm and pronunciation, while podcast sections cover shows made for learners and shows made for native speakers. There is also guidance on setting realistic routines and tracking progress. The material has four levels, Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced and Expert, and works with any language you are studying at your own pace.

Each level is unlocked on its own

Level 1 / 4

Beginner

What you will study

You will study how to pick content at the right difficulty, use subtitles in both languages, keep a simple vocabulary notebook and replay short scenes. Topics also cover building a realistic weekly routine around the media you enjoy.

Who this level is for

This level is for learners who want to use films, series, songs and podcasts to support their language study. It explains how to choose suitable content and turn casual watching or listening into focused practice.

What you will be able to do

By the end of this level, you should be able to choose media that matches your level, use subtitles as a learning tool, record useful new words and follow a simple, enjoyable listening routine.

Level 2 / 4

Intermediate

What you will study

Topics include shadowing, dictation of short clips, mining sentences for vocabulary, using spaced repetition and learning song lyrics. You will also study how to summarise episodes aloud and gradually reduce your reliance on subtitles.

Who this level is for

Intended for learners who already use media casually and want to learn more from it. The level introduces active techniques that turn favourite shows, songs and podcasts into regular listening, vocabulary and speaking practice.

What you will be able to do

After this level, you should be able to use shadowing and dictation effectively, build vocabulary from real content, summarise what you watch or hear and rely less on subtitles over time.

Level 3 / 4

Advanced

What you will study

You will study slang, humour, cultural references and rapid connected speech in films, series and podcasts. Techniques include imitating characters' intonation, discussing episodes aloud, writing short reviews and comparing different accents and regional varieties.

Who this level is for

This level suits learners who understand much of what they watch and want to tackle harder material. It focuses on native-speed content, informal language and using media to improve speaking and expression.

What you will be able to do

Once you complete this level, you should be able to follow more native-speed content, recognise common slang and cultural references, imitate natural intonation and talk or write about what you watch in detail.

Level 4 / 4

Expert

What you will study

This stage covers designing your own media-based study plan, analysing dialogue for register and nuance, following content without subtitles, and creating responses such as summaries, discussions or your own short podcast episodes in the target language.

Who this level is for

Designed for experienced learners who want media to become a complete, self-directed part of their language study. The focus is on long-term planning, deeper analysis and using authentic content across all four language skills.

What you will be able to do

At this final level, you should be able to plan and review your own media-based learning, follow content without subtitles more often and produce spoken or written responses that reflect natural, real-world language.
