About this study guide

Academic writing follows conventions that are rarely explained in detail, which can make a first journal article feel difficult. This learning material walks through the research paper from start to finish. It covers the common IMRaD structure, writing a focused abstract and title, building an introduction that leads to a clear research question, describing methods so others could repeat them, and presenting results with tables and figures. You will also study how to write a balanced discussion, acknowledge limitations, cite and reference sources consistently, and avoid plagiarism. Later levels look at choosing a suitable journal, following author guidelines and replying to reviewer comments. The material explains writing practice and does not promise acceptance by any journal. Four levels, Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced and Expert, are studied at your own pace.

Each level is unlocked on its own

Level 1 / 4

Beginner

What you will study

You will study the common IMRaD structure, how to write a focused title and abstract, the basics of academic tone, how to cite and reference sources consistently, and how to avoid plagiarism when using other researchers' work.

Who this level is for

This level is designed for learners who are new to academic writing or preparing their first research paper. It explains the conventions of scholarly writing that are often assumed but rarely explained step by step.

What you will be able to do

After this level, you should be able to outline a research paper using the IMRaD structure, write a clear abstract and cite sources correctly in a recognised academic referencing style.

Level 2 / 4

Intermediate

What you will study

Topics include building an introduction that leads to a clear research question, describing methods so others could repeat them, presenting results with tables and figures, writing a balanced discussion and acknowledging limitations honestly.

Who this level is for

For learners who know the basic structure of a paper, this level concentrates on writing each section well, so the introduction, methods, results and discussion work together as one clear argument.

What you will be able to do

You should be able to write a complete draft of a research paper in which each section is clear, results are well presented and the discussion stays balanced and honest about limitations.

Level 3 / 4

Advanced

What you will study

You will study choosing a suitable journal, following author guidelines, writing cover letters, responding to reviewer comments point by point, revising a manuscript without weakening its argument and writing for readers outside your own specialism.

Who this level is for

Aimed at researchers with solid writing experience, the Advanced level looks at how to prepare a paper for the publication process, from choosing a suitable journal to revising a manuscript after peer review.

What you will be able to do

By the end of this level, you should be able to prepare a manuscript that follows a journal's guidelines and respond to reviewer comments clearly and constructively. Acceptance decisions remain with each journal.

Level 4 / 4

Expert

What you will study

Topics include coordinating co-authors and a consistent voice, structuring review articles and longer studies, writing for interdisciplinary audiences, presenting uncertain or contested results responsibly and reviewing colleagues' manuscripts with useful, constructive comments.

Who this level is for

The Expert level is for experienced academics who want to refine their writing further, lead multi-author papers and handle the difficult judgements involved in presenting complex, contested or interdisciplinary findings.

What you will be able to do

You will be able to lead the writing of complex multi-author papers, present uncertain findings responsibly, write clearly for readers across disciplines and support colleagues in improving their own manuscripts.
